The 2009-2010 Union Leadership Institute will again be held at the Illinois Federation of Teachers Robert M. Healey Center in Westmont, Illinois. Most ULI courses are presented over three weekend-long sessions. Participants in these courses should plan on attending all three sessions. In addition, we are offering one (1) single-weekend session and one (1) single-day course. ULI sessions will be held on the following dates:
Session 1: November 7-8, 2009
Session 2: February 6-7, 2010
Session 3: April 24-25, 2010
We will send registration reminders to each participant prior to the February and April sessions. Confirmation notices and agendas will also be mailed to participants prior to each weekend session. Participants who pay on their own for registration and who will not be reimbursed by their locals may be eligible for reduced registration fees through the UPD rebate process. Please note the information regarding the “Individual Member Rebate” included on the registration form.

Courses presented over three weekend sessions in November, February & April
Participants must attend all three Weekend-sessions to complete these courses.
Building a Political Powerhouse
An effective political/legislative action program can make the difference in enacting desirable legislation, in electing public officials who support our members and in mobilizing members around local issues. This course will cover elements that go into building an effective political program, including:
- Communicating with members about political issues
- Engaging members in our political program
- Mobilizing members around local issues, such as school board elections, district referendum and other legislative issues
- Raising funds for COPE.
Grievance Administration (Additional $24 material fee)
If thoughts of grievances cause you to panic, take this course and relax. Throughout these workshops you will learn to:
- Separate gripes from grievances
- Develop grievance investigation and research skills
- Take problem-solving approaches to settlements
- Write, prepare and present grievances.
Introduction to Collective Bargaining
Designed for those with little or no bargaining experience, this course helps you understand how and why negotiations works and teaches you how to participate actively in the bargaining process.
- Develop surveys to generate negotiation proposals
- Learn the different stages in a negotiation
- Learn what makes the negotiation team work well together
- Learn how the mediation process works,
Union Leadership Development
Being a union leader isn’t easy in today’s tough economic and political climate. This course will help you make your role more manageable and rewarding. You will learn to:
- Recognize your personal leadership style
- Understand constructive vs. destructive leadership behaviors
- Minimize personality conflicts
- Empower and motivate others.
2009-10 Union Leadership Institute Single Weekend Course Descriptions
These courses are presented and completed in a single day, or in a single weekend
Teaching Labor History in Schools – Saturday, February 6, 2010
This single-day course uses hands-on materials and complete lesson plans that high school teachers can use to teach labor history to their students. As an example, participants will review the role of unions in the civil rights movement. Videos and other teaching resources will be presented and reviewed.
TRS – Inside and Out for Leadership - April 24-25, 2010
Learn the ins and outs of the TRS system, including payments, penalties, formulae, rules and regulations. Become knowledgeable about the system and be able to advise others on how TRS works.
