Parents, students, and educators will “walk in” October 6th for the schools our students deserve [UPDATED]

9/22/2016

On October 6th, thousands of educators, parents, and students will walk into their schools - together - to build the schools their communities deserve. These actions are part of a national movement sponsored by the Alliance to Reclaim our Schools. In 2015, 100 cities and towns, 1,500 schools, and 65,000 people took this action across the United States.

Our students deserve:

  • Quality public education that serves all
  • A commitment to an investment in their future
  • Collaboration between parents, teachers, and their communities
  • Access to their college dreams through MAP grants

Last year in Chicago, Chicago Teachers Union, Local 1 members, conducted walk-ins with parents and students at more than 150 neighborhood schools to highlight the need for adequate funding and to call on CPS to invest in kids' futures. Peoria Federation of Teachers, Local 780 members, welcomed excited students into Valeska Hinton Early Childhood Education Center after adults heard remarks inside from Local 780 President Jeff Adkins-Dutro and other invited guests, including Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis, Dist. Superintendent Sharon Desmoulin Kherat, and Regional Superintendent Beth Derry. The 23 teachers in the Fairmont Council of AFT Local 604 called for "the schools all our children deserve" at their walk-in in Lockport, organized by Council leaders Bethany Gallegos, Mary Ann Bailey, and Bianca Diaz. Teachers and bus drivers in the Woodstock Council of the McHenry Federation of Teachers, IFT Local 1642, joined the call for good schools during walk-in events in schools throughout Dist. 200.
