Quinn Signs Bill to Fix Certification Oversight

5/09/2012
In mid-December 2011, IFT staff became aware of serious, technical concerns over recent certification changes that could cost some teachers their jobs. Because of swift action at the local level, cooperation with the Illinois State Board of Education and the help of Representative Linda Chapa LaVia (D-Aurora) and Senator Heather Steans (D-Chicago), a fix to these previous oversights has been signed by Governor Quinn, effective immediately.

Senate Bill 3393 (Steans/Chapa LaVia) makes changes to the new teacher licensure law enacted this year, SB 1799. SB 3393 provides that lapsed teaching certificates may be immediately reinstated once the applicant has paid all back fees to the State Board of Education by Sept. 1, 2012. After Sept. 1, the applicant must pay all back fees and either complete nine semester course hours or pay an additional penalty fee.
