The Finish Line is Near

Dear IFT Friends,

With only a few more critical days to go before Election Day, I want to take a moment to thank you for your tireless work on behalf of IFT-endorsed candidates. The finish line is in sight, so I ask you to keep up your efforts until we cross it and secure key victories in our state and nation on November 6.

Most polls are predicting that the presidential election will be very close, and many important races here in Illinois are in a virtual dead heat. In these very tight contests, EVERY VOTE truly will make a difference. That is why your continued efforts are essential in these final days of Election 2012.

Whether you have been making phone calls, canvassing door-to-door, writing op-eds to your local newspaper or talking to friends and family about the key issues in this election, don’t stop now. There are too many important issues at stake to back down: a dangerous, undemocratic Constitutional Amendment on the Illinois ballot; threats to teacher and public employee pensions and collective bargaining rights, preK-12 education funding, access to higher education, women’s rights, healthcare for all Americans and much, much more.

As teachers, support staff and public employees, I don't need to remind you of the unfair attacks we have endured the past few years. But they are just another reason why we must press on. We must channel our anger and frustration with being blamed for problems we didn’t create into energy that helps elect individuals to office who will advocate for us.

We also have a responsibility to those we serve. Illinois students, citizens and communities NEED us. We must do everything in our power to speak out on their behalf until the very last vote has been cast on Tuesday night.

With my sincerest appreciation for all you have done, I ask you to go the extra mile in these last few hours to create a positive outcome on November 6. Middle class Americans and all Illinoisans will benefit tomorrow from what you do today.

In Solidarity and with Gratitude,
