Illinois Constitutional Amendment Fails

11/07/2012
Thanks to the efforts of IFT members and our We Are One coalition partners, Illinois voters have rejected a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would have directly impacted your retirement security.

House Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment (HJRCA 49) would have changed the Illinois Constitution to require a 3/5 vote - rather than a simple majority - to improve pension and retirement benefits for teachers, higher education professionals and all other public employees.

With about 90 percent of the vote reported on Wednesday morning, the measure fell short of the two criteria needed for passage.
