Make Plans Now to Attend Rally to Protect YOUR Pension

12/10/2012
The IFT is joining our partners in the We Are One Illinois coalition for two important days of action – THURSDAY, January 3 and FRIDAY, January 4, 2013. Please join us to help stop efforts to advance non-negotiated pension legislation during this "lame duck" session.

You must make your voice heard! IFT members will join thousands teachers, higher education professionals, state employees and other public servants who will be lobbying legislators and rallying in the State Capitol during this historic two-day event.

The IFT is coordinating two "action" shifts on both January 3 & 4.

  • SHIFT A - Participants far from Springfield will arrive in time to lobby lawmakers in the morning, then attend the coalition rally at noon.
  • SHIFT B - Participants near Springfield will attend the coalition rally when they arrive, then lobby lawmakers in the afternoon.
Planned Schedule for January 3 & 4
  • 9:30 – 10:45 am  — “Shift A” buses and self-travelers arrive at the IFT/IEA coordinated drop-off area.
Participants will be able to enjoy coffee and snacks in a heated, enclosed tent. IFT and IEA staff and volunteers will provide a briefing on the day’s activities.

    The coordinated drop-off area is:
IEA Legislative Office | 100 East Edwards Street
    Statehouse Complex, Springfield, IL

  • 10:00 am – Noon — "Shift A" legislative lobbying
If possible, IFT members should contact their lawmakers’ offices in advance to schedule a meeting with their legislator.
  • 11:30 am – Noon — “Shift B” buses and self-travelers arrive at the coordinated drop-off area.
Participants will be briefed on the upcoming activities during a quick lunch before heading to the Capitol.

    The coordinated drop-off area is:
IEA Legislative Office | 100 East Edwards Street
    Statehouse Complex, Springfield, IL

  • Noon - 1:00 pm — We Are One rally!
This rally will include leaders from each of the We Are One coalition unions. Other speakers may participate in the agenda as well. Note: Due to construction, significant portions of the Capitol Building are closed off. This means that rally participants may have to participate from 2nd and 3rd floors. In addition, because of the challenges with limited entrances, participants should expect longer-than-usual wait times to pass through security to enter the building. This could also prolong the start-time of the rally.
  • 1:45 – 2:15 pm — “Shift A” participants depart
Shift A participants who traveled by bus will return to the coordinated IFT/IEA tent to pick up a boxed lunch and re-board buses for the trip home.
  • 1:30 – 4:00 pm — “Shift B” legislative lobbying
If possible, IFT members should contact their lawmakers’ offices in advance to schedule a meeting with their legislator.
  • 4:00 pm  — “Shift B” participants depart
Shift B participants who have traveled via bus will return to the IFT/IEA tent to re-board buses for the trip home.

Busing Arrangements / Plans
The IFT is working to provide buses to Springfield on both January 3 & 4 from the following locations*. Contact your IFT regional office to sign up.
  • Champaign
  • Chicago
  • Fairview Heights
  • Peoria
  • Quincy
  • Rockford
  • Skokie
  • Westmont
*Local pick-up/drop-off areas are TBD and will be announced when available.

Important Points to Consider
  • We want to have a major presence on both January 3 & 4. Participants are encouraged to sign-up to attend both days, if possible, but it is not required.
  • Due to expected cold temperatures, we strongly encourage members to dress warmly. Because all participants will go through security to enter the Capitol, participants may have to wait in outdoor lines for extended times.
  • While efforts are being made to ensure that participants receive a lunchtime meal, you may wish to bring additional snacks for the trip.
  • Finally, we are unsure what pension legislation may be on the table at that time. Be aware that you may be asked to participate in additional actions during the second week of January, as well.
