Members Demand Lawmakers Keep Their Pension Promise

IFT members joined thousands of fellow unionists and supporters today in Springfield for Day 1 of the We Are One Illinois coalition's two-day rally and lobbying action.

Thousands of teachers, higher education professionals, state employees and other public servants traveled to the Capitol by busloads and carloads from around the state to tell lawmakers to oppose unfair pension cuts being proposed in HB 1447 (the Quinn plan) and HB 6210.

IFT President Dan Montgomery fired up the crowd that packed into the Capitol rotunda, declaring, “We are fighting for what we have earned and we will NOT give up!" Other speakers echoed similar sentiments while the crowd chanted, "Whose pensions? Our pensions!" and “A Pension is a Promise!”
After the rally, members lobbied state senators to tell their personal stories and insist that lawmakers keep the state’s promise to its dedicated public servants.

Members will gather tomorrow on Day 2 to continue to make their collective voice heard and to keep the pressure on lawmakers during this lame duck session.
Those who can’t make the trip to Springfield to participate in the rally should e-mail or call their state senator IMMEDIATELY to tell him or her to oppose cuts to the pension you have paid for and were promised.
