IFT Stands Tall With SEIU Local 73

Approximately 800 SEIU members at the University of Illinois Urbana/Champaign campus have gone on strike. The university has transferred in other employees to try and do the work of the building and food service workers during the strike which SEIU has said will last for 3 days. IFT members in the Graduate Employee Organization (GEO) have been walking picket lines in support of striking employees. Faculty members have shown support as well. A rally will be held on March 13 in front of the Illini Union at 11:30 to show support for these union members.
SEIU members took a wage freeze in 2011 and haven’t seen wages keep up with the cost of living for several years. SEIU Local 73 says,

“With increased costs to healthcare contributions and an expected increase to pension contribution during the duration of the contract, the final wage proposal would result in a decreased take home net pay than last year. There is no doubt the university, who has given out several outlandish wage increases to high-ranking managers and has an increased operating budget year after year, has the money to come to the table with a fair contract proposal that keeps up with the cost of living for low-wage workers. We await their call to resume negotiations.”
