IFT Supports SJR 32: Call for a Review in School Funding Fairness

4/30/2013
School funding reform has always been a top IFT priority. Fair school funding provides every child – regardless of zip code – an equal opportunity for a world class education. That must include not only math and reading, but a rich curriculum of art, music, business/vocational programs, foreign language courses and valuable extra-curricular programs. Without them, our kids are being shortchanged.

As Illinois public schools are forced to make cuts, teachers and support staff do their very best to give students what they need to achieve and grow in the classroom. Every year, that gets more difficult. Research shows that children benefit most from small class sizes and individual attention from highly-qualified staff. There is no doubt that investing in great schools builds strong communities.

That is why the Illinois Federation of Teachers supports Senate Joint Resolution 32. This resolution seeks to conduct a thorough review of the existing distribution methods and expenditures of education funding and make recommendations to implement a fair education funding system in every Illinois community. It will serve to reinforce the work of the Education Funding Advisory Board (EFAB), on which IFT President Dan Montgomery serves. You can read a recent EFAB report here

Our union stands with Sen. Andy Manar in support of SJR 32. Sign his online petition here to help bring equity to school funding in Illinois.
