IFT teacher makes the Top 12

The IFT is proud to announce that Steven Elza, a member of the Northwest Suburban Teachers Union, Local 1211, is among just 12 teachers from across the state selected as finalists in the Illinois State Board of Education’s annual “Those Who Excel” educator recognition program. The winner will be named the “2015 Illinois Teacher of the Year” in late October.

Elza is an automotive technology teacher at William Fremd High School in Palatine (Township High School District 211).

“Teaching is much more than a job, it’s a passion,” said IFT President Dan Montgomery. “The IFT is privileged to represent outstanding professionals like Steven who prove every day that they love what they do and are committed to our kids and our communities.”

IFT members have a history of winning the top honor. Most recently, another Local 1211 member, Brian Curtin, received the award in 2013. Ruth Meissen, a member of the Harlem Federation of Teachers, Local 540, was named the winner in 2008.

Nearly 250 nominations were reviewed this year by a selection committee of administrators, teachers, and representatives from educational service personnel, student support personnel, and past winners before the final 12 were selected.

The 2015 Illinois Teacher of the Year will be announced during the "Those Who Excel" banquet in October in Normal. The winner will represent Illinois at NASA Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama, and in the Council of Chief State School Officers’ National Teacher of the Year Program.

Congratulations and best of luck to Steven!
