Mike Frerichs - the Clear Choice for State Treasurer

When it comes to fiscal responsibility, proven experience, and a commitment to middle-class families, only one candidate for State Treasurer has them all. That’s why the IFT proudly supports Mike Frerichs for State Treasurer.

“As State Senator, Mike Frerichs has been a tireless advocate for what matters most to teachers and students, and we’re confident that he will continue to defend their interests in the Treasurer’s office.” - IFT President Dan Montgomery

Elected in 2006 to serve the 52nd Senate District (parts of Champaign and Vermilion Counties), Frerichs has an outstanding record of support on critical education and labor issues. As Treasurer, he will make middle-class families – not wealthy special interests - our state’s top priority.

“I’m running for Treasurer to bring accountability, transparency and competency to Illinois' finances, and to put state investments to work to help build out the middle class.” - Mike Frerichs, 2014 IFT candidate questionnaire

A native of Gifford, Illinois (pop. 975) and the son of hard-working union parents, Mike Frerichs strongly supports collective bargaining and opposes “right-to-work-for-less” legislation.
Frerichs is a vocal advocate to protect public employee pensions and co-sponsor of union-negotiated Senate Bill 2404, fair pension legislation supported by the IFT.

“I see it [SB2404] as the most fair and constitutional reform proposal presented in Springfield.” – Mike Frerichs, 2014 IFT candidate questionnaire

Frerichs also consistently voted NO on pension-slashing SB1, which we are now fighting in court.

Frerichs has pledged to bring more transparency and accountability to state finances, and he has the experience to get it done. In the Senate, he has served as the chair of the Agriculture and Conservation Committee and the Higher Education Committee, two areas in which the Treasurer’s office manages investments. He also served on the Financial Institutions Committee and the Pensions and Investment Committee. He currently serves as a co-chair on the Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability.

Before being elected State Senator, Frerichs was Champaign County Auditor (2002-07), where he became a Certified Public Finance Officer and received national recognition every year for his office’s strict oversight and transparency.

As State Treasurer, Mike Frerichs would make Illinois government accountable to ALL of us, not just the privileged few. During early voting (October 20-November 2) or on Election Day (November 4), the IFT urges you to cast your ballot for Mike Frerichs for State Treasurer.
