Sign this petition calling on President Obama and Congress to take action on student loan debt

$1.3 trillion.

That’s not the national budget, or the deficit—it’s the crushing student debt burden 40 million Americans like me are carrying.

The AFT has joined a coalition that’s calling on President Obama and the U.S. Congress to forgive all student loan debt, public and private. Add your name!

Eighty-six percent of all student loans are held by the federal government. And while the government rakes in billions in profits from student loan interest, people like me are forced to delay or give up on our dreams so we can make our payments.

I’m a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where I also work as a teaching assistant in the anthropology department.

When I started school, my goal was to teach anthropology and indigenous studies.

Unfortunately, the cost of my education has left me with tens of thousands of dollars in debt. To repay my loans, I’ll probably have to seek work in the private sector rather than pursuing my dreams of teaching.

Add your name to the petition: Cancel all student debt!

Student loan debt isn’t just crushing my dreams and the dreams of millions of others—it’s also holding our economy back.

Last year, the New York Federal Reserve released a report showing that student loan debt is keeping young people from buying homes or cars, and dragging down the entire economy.

Meanwhile, tuition keeps rising as states cut budgets. More and more students have to take on massive debt to earn their degrees, and the problem is only getting worse.

Add your name to the petition calling on President Obama and Congress to take action to forgive all student loan debt.

We need big action to address a big problem. I hope you’ll join me, the AFT and many others in calling for all student loan debt to be forgiven.
