Welcome to the IFT

4/07/2016
The IFT’s strength comes from our members, and we’re growing stronger every day! Our union is proud to welcome to the family more than 250 new members in these local unions and councils:

Kishwaukee College Adjunct Education Association, Local 6559 – This group of about 130 part-time adjunct instructors at Kishwaukee College in Malta wanted to have a voice in their working conditions and pay, so they joined the IFT last July. Since then the local has been hard at work building their union and negotiating with college administration for a fair agreement. Their efforts have paid off, and local members are tentatively scheduled to vote on their first contract later this month. Congratulations!

Passages Charter School Council of ChicagoACTS (Alliance of Charter Teachers and Staff), Local 4343 – The teachers, support staff, and clinicians at Passages Charter School in Chicago’s West Edgewater neighborhood voted overwhelmingly on March 31 to become the IFT’s newest charter school unit. The 46 members joined the IFT and ChicagoACTS to help improve teaching and student learning at their school, as 32 other charter school campuses across Chicago have also done. The Passages Council is already working to establish a leadership structure in preparation for bargaining, which they expect to begin in late Spring.

Support Staff Council of District 64, Local 1274 – This unit of 70 members in Park Ridge, a northern suburb of Chicago, was certified on March 28 by the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board (IELRB) after successfully completing the “card check” process for union recognition. The newest council of the North Suburban Teachers Union includes custodians, maintenance workers, secretaries, and assistants who sought IFT representation to have a greater voice in the decisions that affect their working conditions and employee benefits.

Tomcat Navy Council of AFT Local 604 (Joliet) – This group of eight full-time ROTC Naval Science Instructors at East Aurora High School in Aurora banded together and joined the IFT last summer to fight the erosion of their employment benefits. The new Council immediately established their constitution, bylaws, and leadership, and have already successfully bargained a three-year contract.
