IFT members receive exemplary teacher recognition

The IFT joined with the Illinois State Board of Education and the Illinois Education Association this week to recognize K-12 educators around the state for outstanding performance in their content areas. Several IFT members were among the 29 teachers honored at the sixth annual Exemplary Teacher Recognition Awards Luncheon held in Bloomington on Tuesday.

IFT President Dan Montgomery praised the honorees.
"Illinois is home to outstanding educators who go above and beyond every day,” he said. “It brings me great pleasure to honor these teachers who give so much of themselves for the students they serve."

The IFT members who were selected to receive awards by their professional education organizations for 2015-16 were:

Stacey Gross, who was named Illinois Art Educator of the Year by the Illinois Art Education Association. Gross is a member of the Champaign Federation of Teachers, Local 1925.

Magadalena Maslowski, who was named ICE Classroom Teacher of the Year by the Illinois Computing Educators. She is a member of AFT Local 604 (Joliet).

Jeannine Moeller, who received the Peabody Energy Leader in Education Award from Peabody Energy. Moeller is a member of the Belleville High School Federation of Teachers, Local 434.

Lauren Musielewicz, who was named Outstanding Economic Educator by 3M and Econ Illinois. She is a member of the Southwest Suburban Federation of Teachers, Local 943.

Emily Weber, who received the Middle School Teaching Award from the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Weber is a member of the Central Teachers and Support Staff Association, Local 4673.

State Superintendent of Education Dr. Tony Smith thanked the winners for their commitment to kids and teaching.

“These outstanding teachers spend their days building relationships with students so they can give each of them the support and guidance they need to learn and grow. The passion, enthusiasm, and dedication for teaching these educators exhibit is felt by students, colleagues, administrators, and parents alike. We are pleased to publicly thank them for their tireless efforts.”

Each year, ISBE recognizes one top teacher and many other extraordinary educators for their service and commitment to education and their communities through the Those Who Excel program. Peoria Federation of Teachers, Local 780, member Kim Thomas was recently named the 2016 Illinois Teacher of the Year.
