Join our effort to change teacher evaluations and more

6/23/2016

The IFT is hard at work advocating for changes to state law that will help Illinois educators and students recognize the benefits of the new federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Teachers and PSRPs, your experience is essential to our future success. Be a part of the change!

We're making progress. Last month, the IFT partnered with the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) and Illinois Education Association (IEA) to hold a Public Education Issues Roundtable (PEIR) meeting on ESSA. Many legislators attended, and the meeting prompted the House Education Curriculum and Policy Committee to conduct a subject matter hearing on ESSA on June 17th. The IFT and CTU were among those who testified.

ESSA provides states the ability to consider changes in many areas that directly affect teaching and learning, including teacher evaluation, testing, student growth, and more. That's why our union is emphasizing to lawmakers the importance of teacher and PSRP involvement in the development of new laws to help Illinois recognize ESSA's flexibility.

Classroom professionals know best what students and schools need to succeed, and recognize the barriers which exist in our state that prohibit every child from reaching his or her greatest potential. Your expert input on this issue is critical.

The IFT will continue to educate lawmakers on what must be done to help Illinois students and schools make the most of ESSA. We will continue to advocate for ESSA implementation that honors the law's intent - shifting focus away from testing and punishment and toward adequate supports for teaching and learning.

We urge you to be a part of this important conversation! Visit the IFT website to learn more and speak out on this important issue that impacts you and your students.
