IFT announces candidate endorsements for November 2016 General Election

Union recognizes commitment to working families and strong public education, services
WESTMONT —By a vote of its Executive Board today, the Illinois Federation of Teachers endorsed the following candidates in the November 2016 General Election. All candidates were chosen for their dedication to public education and public services for our communities throughout Illinois and the nation.
The list includes support for former Senator and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in her bid for U.S. President and two candidates running for statewide office, U.S. Representative Tammy Duckworth who is running for the U.S. Senate, and Chicago City Clerk Susana Mendoza, candidate for Illinois State Comptroller.
“I echo President Obama’s assessment that Hillary Clinton is the most qualified presidential candidate in history, which is why it brings me great pleasure to announce that the Illinois Federation of Teachers voted to endorse Secretary Clinton for President,” said Dan Montgomery, a high school English teacher and President of the Illinois Federation of Teachers. “Her experience, coupled with her deep understanding of the challenges working families face every day, makes her the right choice for America. We know she will stand up for educators and the communities we serve. I am proud that the IFT is with her.”
“Representative Tammy Duckworth has shown time and time again in the U.S. House of Representatives that she is committed to education and building an economy that works for all, not just those at the top,” added Montgomery. “She has given so much to our country as a veteran and advocate, and we know she will continue her important work in the U.S. Senate.”
"Chicago City Clerk Susana Mendoza will be the independent watchdog we need in Springfield, which is why the Illinois Federation of Teachers enthusiastically endorses her for State Comptroller,” said Montgomery. “Her opponent – the current Comptroller – was endorsed by Governor Rauner, who has spent his time in office bringing Illinois to a halt to push his personal agenda. We need a fighter in that office who will take on the Governor, and Susana Mendoza has shown herself to be a tireless defender of the people of Illinois as both clerk and as State Representative.”
The IFT reviews candidates through a multi-step process that includes surveying on a variety of important issues, regional discussions open to all IFT members in the candidate’s community, and final consideration by the 40 elected members of our statewide Executive Board, which represents our union’s diverse constituency. These endorsements reflect the results of that democratic process.
