Rauner’s speech can’t hide failure of leadership

Following Governor Rauner’s State of the State address today, Illinois Federation of Teachers (IFT) President Dan Montgomery released this statement:
“The State of Illinois has been around for 200 years. We’ve had a budget for 198 of them. Democrats and Republicans worked together before. The only difference now is Bruce Rauner.
Today’s speech made it clear that Governor Rauner has accomplished very little in the last two years. He has held Illinois hostage, vetoing budgets that don't meet his unpopular, political demands and driving our state downward into chaos. Look no further than our higher education system.
Governor Rauner has called his approach ‘leverage.’ We call it irreparable harm and a failure of leadership.

Tying the budget to anti-worker reforms is not only wrong, it's unnecessary. We can ask the most wealthy to pay their fair share and close corporate loopholes to help fund our state without harming working people.”

Illinois Working Together Co-Chairs Michael Carrigan and Jorge Ramirez released the following statement in response to Governor Rauner's State of the State address:
“The state of the state is worse now than when Gov. Rauner took office and it’s his fault. He is forcing the people of Illinois to pay a heavy price for his obstructionism. His obsession with getting a pound of flesh from working families before signing a budget is unconscionable.” – Illinois Working Together Co-Chair and Illinois AFL-CIO President Michael Carrigan

“After more than two years in office, Gov. Rauner has failed in his most basic responsibility as governor: introducing a balanced budget. Rauner’s failure has triggered draconian cuts that have harmed students, seniors, working families, and the Illinois economy. The only thing worse than the chaos the governor has inflicted on Illinois would be the devastation caused by enacting the Rauner agenda.” - Illinois Working Together Co-Chair and Chicago Federation of Labor President Jorge Ramirez

“We call on the governor to drop his agenda once and for all and work collaboratively to begin to reverse the harm he has caused to our state. The way to move Illinois forward is by raising wages, making the wealthiest and big corporations pay their fair share, fully funding schools, and ensuring a secure retirement for all working people in our state. Hardworking families in Illinois simply cannot afford another two years of hostage-taking and bullying from the governor.”
