“Bucks for Books” campaign unites community around literacy

In December, the Dupo Federation of Teachers, Local 1732, worked with students, parents, and the community we serve to raise more than $1500 for the Daugherty Public Library through a campaign called “Bucks for Books.” Our library was struggling to survive due to budget cuts and recent acts of vandalism.

The Daugherty Public Library is at the heart of the Dupo Community. Students at both the grade school and high school use this vital resource. In addition to being the union president, I teach reading in Dupo and I know first hand how crucial the library is to our student’s success.

Kids go to the library to have a safe place to go until their parents are home. They use the high speed Internet for research when none is available, and they go there to have a quiet place to study and work.

Students were instrumental in the campaign. One high school student CJ Allen collected nearly $100 through his efforts. This was truly a community effort showing how dedicated we are to our students and the community.
