Stop Gov. Rauner from playing politics with our schools

Last month, a bipartisan group of lawmakers voted YES on a state budget, BUT now school funding is on hold.

Schools can't receive state aid until a new funding plan becomes law. Senate Bill 1 (SB1) treats ALL schools fairly and makes sure every district gets the funding it needs. Governor Rauner callously vetoed SB1, striking provisions that help schools long-term. Rauner continues to pit district against district, and has renewed his push for vouchers and collective bargaining reforms.

Please call 217.733.5010 and urge your Representative to do the right thing for schools and students. Ask them to override the Governor's veto of SB1.

Under SB1:
  • Schools in your area would open on time.
  • NO school district in the state would lose funding, and many districts will receive additional state dollars.
  • Every child – no matter their zip code – would have access to a high-quality public education.
Recently, Rauner publicized a one-year snapshot of funding provided by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) to say his amendatory veto is better for schools. In the short term, money from Chicago is redistributed to other districts. HOWEVER, Rauner's amendatory veto would have long-term negative effects on ALL our schools.

We urge the House to follow the Senate's lead and grasp this moment in Illinois history, to finally do right by our children statewide and to override the Rauner veto when it convenes on Wednesday.

We've come too far to stop now.

The House is scheduled to be in session Wednesday, August 16 at 11 am. Please call 217.733.5010 as soon as possible and ask your Representative to override the Governor's veto of SB1.
