Candidate for Congress Brendan Kelly Stands with Teachers Against the GOP Tax Plan

11/30/2017
BELLEVILLE – Wednesday, St. Clair County State's Attorney Brendan Kelly, candidate for U.S. Congress, and local teachers rallied and held a press conference, urging members of Congress to vote NO on the GOP-Ryan Tax Plan. The plan is a massive redistribution of wealth from working families to wealthy corporations. This bill will take away teachers’ ability to deduct classroom expenses from taxes, and can reduce revenue that supports public education.

Raising taxes on middle class families right here in Southern Illinois and burdening our children with more debt to give even more to the elite powerful few is not tax reform - its a con-job," said Brendan Kelly. "We need meaningful relief for hard-working families, not to rip away deductions that help seniors afford medical bills and allow school teachers to write off classroom supplies. This hustle is not what people voted for and it shows how Paul Ryan and his crew still don't get it.
I spend hundreds out-of-pocket on classroom supplies, far more than the current $250 deduction I can claim on my taxes,” said Cyndi Oberle Dahm, Belleville high school teacher and president of Belleville Federation of Teachers - Local 434.  “The GOP-Ryan Tax Bill would take away my ability to deduct one cent. This will hurt my students, who will have to go without hundreds of dollars of critical school supplies.

The GOP-Ryan Tax Bill would repeal a century-old state and local tax deduction. This deduction supports services like public education, public safety, law enforcement, public health services and infrastructure. Thirty one percent of Illinois households take this deduction, the average amount being $12,523.

Approximately 1.9 million Illinois households deduct state and local taxes. The repeal of this tax would raise taxes on 27 percent of Illinois residents, on average $2,548 annually.

In Illinois’ 12th Congressional District, 24% of taxpayers will lose an average deduction of $8,798 per year.

Brendan Kelly is running in IL-12, a traditionally Democratic stronghold that is currently represented by Rep. Mike Bost (R). Kelly is a Navy veteran and the top prosecutor in St. Clair County. He was the first prosecutor in Illinois to file suit against Big Pharma and one of the few to go after Wall Street banks. Kelly has been endorsed of VoteVets, the Blue Dog Democratic Caucus, and End Citizen’s United. In addition, Kelly was just listed as one of 11 Red to Blue pick-up opportunities for Democrats.

The Illinois Federation of Teachers represents 103,000 teachers and paraprofessionals in PreK-12 school districts throughout Illinois, faculty and staff at Illinois’ community colleges and universities, public employees under every statewide elected constitutional officer, and retirees.
