IFT Endorses Raoul for Attorney General, Newman for Congress in IL-3

WESTMONT – By a vote of its Executive Board today, the Illinois Federation of Teachers made additional key endorsements in the 2018 Democratic primary election. For their commitment to public education, services, and working families, the IFT supports Kwame Raoul for Attorney General and Marie Newman in Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District against incumbent Dan Lipinski.
Kwame Raoul has consistently stood up for public education by voting to increase school funding, advocating for a more equitable funding formula, and opposing Governor Rauner’s anti-union agenda,” said IFT President Dan Montgomery. “We appreciate Kwame’s leadership in the fight for an elected school board in Chicago, to give voters a voice and hold the system accountable. As he has done throughout his life, Kwame Raoul will put people first, and we are proud to support his campaign for Attorney General.”
“IFT is proud to endorse Marie Newman for Congress in Illinois’ 3rd District and know she will be a tireless champion for women and working families in our communities,” Montgomery said. “Dan Lipinski has been no friend to public schools or our students, voting to block regulation of for-profit colleges while supporting numerous school voucher programs and so-called ‘education reform’ efforts. Now more than ever, we need someone who will stand up for what’s right in Washington, and that is Marie Newman.”
More than 5,000 IFT members live in the 3rd congressional district of Illinois.
In December, the IFT endorsed JB Pritzker for Governor in the Democratic primary election.
Additional legislative and statewide endorsements are forthcoming.
The IFT’s endorsements come after months of extensively vetting candidates and gathering member input. The union’s multi-step process includes surveying candidates on a variety of important issues, regional discussions open to all IFT members in the candidate’s community, and final consideration by the 40 elected members of our statewide Executive Board, which represents our union’s diverse constituency. These endorsements reflect the results of that robust, democratic process.
The Illinois Federation of Teachers (IFT) is made up of more than 100,000 teachers and paraprofessionals in PreK-12 school districts throughout Illinois, faculty and staff at community colleges and universities, public employees under every statewide elected constitutional officer, and retirees.  The Executive Board represents all constituencies and includes officers and 40 vice presidents elected from nearly 400 locals and councils throughout Illinois.
The IFT is a state affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and AFL-CIO.
