Illinois Federation of Teachers comment on District 90 school board member views

Forty leaders from across the state meeting in O’Fallon this weekend

O’FALLON, IL – As union leaders from across the state gather in O’Fallon this weekend for the Illinois Federation of Teachers (IFT) Executive Board meeting, IFT President Dan Montgomery and First Vice President Michael Day (President of the IFT Southwest Area Council) released the following statement in response to emails and recent comments made by District 90 school board member Steve Springer.
“Students come to school from diverse backgrounds not only to learn how to read and do math, but how to be good citizens in our democracy. We teach them tolerance, kindness, and justice. Mr. Springer’s discriminatory comments have no place in this vibrant community or the school district that serves its young children. His views do not reflect the views of our members, his own colleagues on the District 90 board, or the broader community he represents.
As we meet here in O’Fallon this weekend, the IFT Executive Board urges Mr. Springer to listen to the hundreds of people of his community who have spoken out against bigotry and hate, and do the right thing.”
The O’Fallon Classroom Federation of Teachers, Local 628, is an affiliate of the Illinois Federation of Teachers.

The Illinois Federation of Teachers (IFT) is made up of more than 100,000 teachers and paraprofessionals in PreK-12 school districts throughout Illinois, faculty and staff at community colleges and universities, public employees under every statewide elected constitutional officer, and retirees.  The IFT Executive Board represents all constituencies and includes officers and 40 vice presidents elected from nearly 400 locals and councils throughout Illinois.
