IFT Announces Candidate Endorsements for March 2016 Primary Election

1/30/2016

Union recognizes commitment to working families and strong public education, services

WESTMONT—By a vote of its Executive Board today, the Illinois Federation of Teachers (IFT) endorsed the following candidates in the March 2016 Primary Election for their commitment to strengthening public education and services, and a willingness to work together with respect.

The IFT reviews candidates through a multi-step process that includes surveying on a variety of important issues, regional discussions open to all IFT members in the candidate’s community, and final consideration by the forty elected members of our statewide Executive Board representing our union’s diverse constituency.

These endorsements reflect the results of that democratic process and include support for two candidates running for statewide office —U.S. Representative Tammy Duckworth for U.S. Senate, and Chicago City Clerk Susana Mendoza, candidate for Illinois State Comptroller.

"As an advocate, veteran, and mother, Tammy Duckworth knows firsthand what sacrifice and commitment mean,” said Dan Montgomery, a high school English teacher and President of the Illinois Federation of Teachers.  "She has always fought tirelessly for our communities, and we’re thrilled to endorse her campaign for U.S. Senate, where she faces an opponent who while on the Chicago school board, voted to close 50 public schools and rubber-stamped a contract that criminally misused public resources."

“We are proud to support Susana Mendoza, who has stood strong with working women and men against Governor Rauner’s harmful political agenda,” added Montgomery. “As Comptroller, we know she will continue to champion the needs of all families, and help bring strength and balance to a state economy that works for everyone, not just the most wealthy."
