Support GEO strikers at UIUC

by Amy Excell | Feb 26, 2018
The University's attempt to end guaranteed tuition waivers would decimate standard graduate employee compensation nationwide.
After 11 months of bargaining and nearly 200 days without a contract, the 2,500 members of the Graduate Employees' Organization (GEO-Local 6300) at the University of Illinois - Urbana-Champaign were forced to the picket lines on February 26. Please support them by donating to the strike fund, joining the lines, sending solidarity messages, and signing this petition today!

The key issue in GEO's fight would impact not only UIUC graduate workers, but their counterparts across the country. The University is demanding the elimination of guaranteed tuition waivers, which student graduate workers rely on in exchange for their labor. This is a long-accepted standard of graduate employee compensation at universities nationwide. If the U of I succeeds in eliminating it, other institutions will do the same.

GEO members are using their freedom to have a collective voice in a strong union to fight this injustice. It's exactly what the powerful forces behind the anti-union Janus case are arguing against today at the Supreme Court.

That's just another reason we must support the GEO's fight! Click here to donate to the GEO strike fund. You may also send a check to:

Visits to the strike lines would be appreciated. Picket lines will be active from 8 am - 5 pm daily at six campus locations. (See highlighted locations on the map below.) When you arrive, please check in at the eternal flame pillar, located between the English building and Lincoln Hall.

If you and your members can't make it, your local or council can send messages of support to GEO on Facebook, or mail letters to the address above. Let the University's chancellor know you support GEO too by signing this petition.

Please do what you can to support these dedicated members in their fight for fairness. Donate, visit the lines, send solidarity messages, and sign this petition today!
