We’ve heard from numerous members across the state and seen in the news that federal agents are intensifying their attacks in Illinois, and our union is responding in real time.
Yesterday, we received a report that two community members in Aurora were taken off school grounds. There are also increasing reports of heavy federal agent presence in and around schools, including in Chicago, Cicero, and Staunton. In Warren Township, two community members were detained inside a school building, a student was assaulted, and a staff member was threatened. Last week, federal agents detained two men inside Gurnee High School. In September, ICE killed a Franklin Park resident shortly after he dropped off his children at school. This is happening here, right now, to people we know and love. We cannot sit in silence.
The IFT is hosting an emergency Know Your Rights training to equip members with the knowledge and skills we all need to help keep our schools and local communities safe, support one another, and respond effectively.
This training will cover:
• Your legal rights if federal agents approach you
• What to do if federal agents come to your home, job site, or neighborhood
• How to safely document incidents and report them
• What policies exist or need to be pushed for at the state and local level to increase
protections in the face of federal attacks
