Members of one IFT council are coming together to welcome new faces and build solidarity, one meal at a time.

IFT members from the McHenry County College Staff Council (MCCSC, Local 1642) are building a sense of community in their union and beyond with their new initiative: Lunch & Learn.
Each month, members and non-members in the bargaining unit are invited to break bread and learn about each other, the work of their union, and the community around them. Topics have included committee activity, the grievance procedure, officer roles and responsibilities, and more.
“We believe the best way to come together and build our union’s strength is to quite literally bring people together toward our common goal,” said MCCSC President David Behrens. “Led by our Vice President, Peyton Spanbauer, the Lunch and Learn program was developed to be informative and instructive, while encouraging both members and non-members to see the value in their union. We’ve also created info packets for new hires, a periodic newsletter, and a plan for regular in-person outreach.”
Members seem to enjoy the monthly get-togethers, and all staff who participate feel more informed and included in the union’s mission to represent and advocate for all staff.

“We’ve renewed our efforts to be inclusive and build a sense of belonging within our union.”
