It is with great sadness and loss that we have received word of the death of IFT Executive Vice President Sean Noonan. There aren't words to say how important he was and the support he gave to Cook County College Teachers Union (CCCTU, Local 1600).
Sean valiantly battled bone cancer for two years. We have lost a tireless leader and friend. Sean fiercely sought and fought for a better world and saw the labor movement as the vehicle for that transformation to take place.
Sean joined Harper College in the fall of 2002 amidst the build up to a teachers strike. He immediately took a leading role organizing and promoting the successful strike. A few years later, he took on the battle of turning the Cook County College Teachers Union into a fighting social organizing union, founding Educators for a Democratic Union. Sean was a union leader who secured good contracts for teachers.
There will be a private memorial service in the future. Sean’s family asks everyone to chronicle your thoughts and memories at the memorial site. Sean was very intentional in wanting his memory preserved through the planting of trees, so please make a donation in lieu of flowers or anything else.
